These Mexican tin hearts, also known as Milagritos, are a typical element of our crafts, very popular today for being a fabulous element to decorate spaces.
The ones you see here are produced by Zapotec artisans from San Martín Tilcajete (Oaxaca) and contain Zapotec engravings and symbols. which can also be seen in the archaeological sites of Oaxaca.
Milagritos are said to have originated in Oaxaca during the colonial era. However, it was the Spanish who introduced them to the rest of the country and much of Latin America. Their main use, As its name suggests, it is to give thanks for a miracle granted or to ask for one. They are also used as an offering and protection, That is why you can often see them on the doors of houses as an amulet.
